Since I am against violence in any form it was clear from the very beginning that joining military is not really an option for me. The home for elderly people I worked at is close to my home so that was pretty convenient. Moreover, I already knew some people there before I even started due to a voluntary school project and so it was an easy and fast decision to apply there.
I really enjoy caring for people and interacting with them, which is something I was not so much aware of before. It was awesome to see how one could make people smile and happy with just small things. Working with old people and especially with people who are living with dementia can be very challenging but it taught me about patience and empathy. During my civil service time I also got in touch with foreign volunteers which then later led me to the decision to go abroad.
